When Your Baby Is in the ICU

This is a story about the time we took Lauren to the pediatrician and didn’t come home for five days. It is also a cautionary tale about why you should always shower before you take your kid to the doctor, no matter how early the appointment. Lauren’s two month well baby visit was scheduled for a Monday morning in March. The pediatrician’s office is about five minutes from our house, so I thought we’d be gone for an hour, max. “I’ll just shower after the appointment,” I said to myself. Oops. Everything was going according to plan, until the doctor listened […]

The Short, Vol. 4

Lauren took her four month vaccines like a champ and she’s tipping the scales at 10 pounds, 12 ounces. #girlpower. Also, that exam table paper has the perfect amount of crinkle, making it irresistible to babies. I got my first library card in fifteen years. Ten minutes after we arrived, I heard the telltale squirt of baby poop, and we left shortly after. I’m excited to teach Lauren how to use the library, and Brian can’t wait to teach her how to snowboard. They say opposites attract… I cooked thee most perfect bacon in the world (note: I like it extra […]

Hair Confessions

The new ‘do. I need to get something off my chest. Or perhaps I should say off my head? [crickets] Maybe not. Let’s move on. I never learned how to properly style my hair. I only know two styles: down and straight, or ponytail. I use Head & Shoulders shampoo, which makes me feel like a middle aged man. Also, I go to Supercuts. Partly because it’s cheap and easy, but mostly because I’m intimidated by hair salons. How to find a stylist, what to ask, who to tip. I’ve had my hair in a sad little mom bun since Lauren […]

The Short, Vol. 3

Breakfast with my best girl and her crazy eyes. Brian, Lauren and I started Mother’s Day off right with a low-key breakfast at Corner Bakery. Brian got me the new Ergobaby ADAPT (no infant insert required!) and an extra side of bacon(!!!). We ended the day with a trip to Costco, which was surprisingly quiet for a Sunday… must not be a popular Mother’s Day destination. Speaking of mothers, one of the girls from our church has been organizing mommy meetups, and they are like food for my soul. We’re all first time moms with babies born within a few months of each other, and […]

When Your Baby Won’t Eat

Lauren at two days old. Here’s what it’s like when your baby won’t eat. She may scream and cry and kick and arch when you try to feed her. I know how you feel. She may only eat half an ounce during a feeding, and you may be feeding her around the clock for months. I know how you feel. She may be miserable, and it will break your heart. I know how you feel. Other people may tell you that all babies are difficult, as if your expectations are the problem. I know how you feel. Other people may […]
